Save the Worms

The other day it rained.  I didn't mind so much.  As long as the clouds are doing something other than being grey, I don't mind if they're around.

I could see my reflection in the sidewalk as I walked back from class, but mostly because I was wearing my so-bright-it-hurts-your-eyes red rain shell.

I could also see worms.  All over the place.  I must have looked drunk as I was walking, but I didn't want to squish the little invertebrates.

As I gazed up the hill at the worm minefield, I saw a girl squat down on the sidewalk about 50 yards away.

What in the world could she be doing?

Said girl, bless her dear heart, was frantically picking up as many sticky worms as she could and throwing them back into the grass.  After a few seconds, she stood up and continued on like nothing had ever happened.

I laughed, but not in a mean sort of way.  I laughed because I was surprised that I could be touched by some random girl saving helpless worms.  That she was aware of the worms on the ground and that she cared enough about them to stop and help them is significant to me.  People don't do things like that very often.

(I also laughed because it was funny)

Moral of the story:

If you look for opportunities to give service, you will find them!

Now go make someone's day a little brighter, even if they are a worm.
